What law school did you attend and what was your graduation year?

North Carolina Central University School of Law, 2006.

Describe a typical work day for you.

I work out in the morning and after lunch, I meet with clients and draft documents for clients. These documents include wills, financial powers of attorney, health care powers of attorney including an advance directive, and medical justification for receiving benefits or accommodations. I also meet with clients to discuss end-of-life planning for themselves and others including Medicaid applications. I also spend considerable time in my role as Disaster Disability Integration for the North Carolina Region of the Red Cross.

Describe what you like to do outside of work.

I like to cook with my husband and spend time with my two sons and their partners and of course my two wonderful granddaughters. I also spend time with other family members who live nearby. I spend considerable time as a Red Cross volunteer in Disaster Disability Integration for the North Carolina Region and Inventory Controller for Client Assistance Cards for the Greater Triangle Region. I put a high priority on maintaining friendships with women friends. I make it a point to meet with as many women friends as possible at least once a month. Finally, I am a member of a spirituality group where we study spiritual practices written in literature and encourage each other to maintain our practices. My practice for the last 8 years is journaling and gratitude journaling.

Please describe a barrier or obstacle you have faced in your professional career.

I was a non-traditional student in law school in that I started law school at the age of 46 and took the bar when I was over 50. I had a full-time job and was going to school three nights a week. I was not a part of the age cohort with my classmates. I was quite grateful when my classmates helped me learn computer skills.

Please describe your reasons for becoming involved in WIP.

I believe in empowering women and one way to do that is to find ways to support each other in our professional and personal lives. One way to do that is to find the time to be with other professional women who might need some encouragement from other women. I want to be able to provide encouragement, suggestions or merely support if another woman needs it.
