The All-Encompassing Secretary of State’s Office

The Secretary of State’s (SoS) Office does it all. From offering helpful materials on starting a business in NC, database to file securities, to storing advance healthcare directives online, the NC SoS’s job is all encompassing and vital to all NC businesses.

 The main divisions within the NC SoS are:

Business Registration, which creates businesses and handles business documents. Go to this division for:

  • Filing Articles of Organization/Incorporation
  • Submitting Annual Reports

  • Ordering certified documents

  • Registering a foreign business in NC & filing Certificate of Authority

Authentication Division which authenticates documents. Go to this division for:

  • Apostilles
  • Obtaining authentication and authority certificates

International Services helps the NC SoS serve as a point of contact for international matters that are non-commercial matters.

Publication Division houses the N.C. Constitution, N.C. Manual, the Directory of State and County Officials of North Carolina and much more.

Securities Division regulates securities, investment advising, and selling of stocks and bonds.

Solicitation Licensing Section controls fundraising and charitable solicitations through an online registry.

In addition to the above-named divisions, the NC SoS also houses an online registry for filing your health care advances. A section on Public Notaries and state trademarks is also available through the NC SoS.
