Mixtape Magic

By Angela Doughty

I would like to think my time as IPL Chair could be described as a compilation of assorted melodies creating the perfect intellectual property mixtape. As we look back, let’s lend an “ear” to the top tracks from the past year.

Track 1:  Is My Subject Matter Eligible?

Our Patent Committee hosted a Lunch & Learn with Carolyn Kosowski of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office covering practical guidance on the USPTO’s examination procedure for subject matter eligibility under 35 U.S.C. § 101.

Track 2: Let’s Do Lunch

Our Tri-City Meeting and Lunch Event spanning across Raleigh, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte afforded members from a variety of geographic locations the opportunity to mix and mingle over lunch.

Track 3:  Trending Trademarks

Our Trademark Committee hosted a Trademark Roundtable with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Trademark Director, Angela Wilson, covering Trademark Office trends, initiatives, and practical approaches for improving the examination process.

Track 4:  Licensing Lessons Learned

Our Licensing Committee hosted a Lunch & Learn Panel consisting of local litigation and transactional practitioners to discuss the lessons learned from the perspectives of negotiating, drafting, and litigating the terms of licensing agreements.

Track 5:  Patenting Athena

Our Biotech and Chemical Committee held a Virtual Roundtable to discuss the recent Athena v. Mayo Federal Circuit decision.

Track 6:  IP for the New Decade

We partnered with the Sports and Entertainment Law Section to provide a diverse CLE program covering the latest developments in patent, trademark, copyright, trade secrets, and sports and entertainment law.

Thanks to the hard work and amazing synergy of our Committee Chairs, Council Members, and general membership, this intellectual property mixtape was mastered!
