Message from the Chair

By Clara Cottrell

I am writing this from my kitchen table—probably where a lot of you are reading this whether you are on your laptop or your phone! My kids just tumbled back in through the door (outside time is over, free time [aka device time] has started), and I am wishing I could go outside, too. A lot of us in the Corporate Counsel Section are busier than ever. We are dealing not only with operations, but now strategy and the fires a virus has started. Some of us are wondering if we will have a job when this is all over. Like the saying goes, “my journey is not yours.” This is a stressful and lonely time (see the recent Loneliness in the Law blog post regardless of your situation. And it is compounded by worries around family members, friends, colleagues, and neighbors.

So, what next?

First, check out the resources the NC Bar Association is making available. These blog posts from the chairs of the Workers’ Compensation Section, Eleasa Harris Allen, and the Sports and Entertainment Law Section, Brandon Huffman, are great places to start! I will not redo what they have already done so well; just take a moment to skim through and, of course, check out the NC Bar Association website. You will find legal webinars, mental health services, and wellness opportunities all in one place!

Second, check in with your friends and colleagues. I have been reluctant to have social Zoom calls. Let’s face it, most of my “normal” days are already filled with WebEx and conference calls! However, this is one where I am happy to stand corrected. Done right, a Zoom happy hour is a way to check in and relax—almost normally. To that end, I want you all to come hang out with me! I will ask about your kids/pets/flora, and you can ask about the time I was sure my husband was going to drive our RV off the side of a mountain (the seats still have indentions where I gripped the armrests so tightly . . .). I will raise a glass of a cold beverage in a law firm’s swag, an insulated mug, and you can laugh at me! Most of all, we can be normal together in an abnormal setting. So, please join the Corporate Counsel Section for a drop in/drop out social via Zoom on Tuesday, April 28, starting at 8 p.m. till we decide we’re done. If you can’t, don’t worry, we’ll try again soon! And of course, if you need a more personal check in, always feel free to email at [email protected].

Take care, my friends, and see you soon!
