Insurance Law Section Annual Meeting and CLE Wrap-Up

By Daniel Knight

In case you missed it, the Insurance Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association held its annual meeting and CLE at the Bar Center in Cary on January 31, 2019.  The theme of this year’s CLE was “Back to the Basics” and included a great selection of speakers covering topics such as CGL Insurance and the Duty to Defend, Excess and Umbrella Insurance, Directors & Officers Insurance, and the Top 10 Insurance Decisions from 2018.  This year’s CLE finished with a segment discussing a hypothetical insurance coverage dispute.

During the Section’s annual meeting, five new Council members were elected to fill the seats of those Council members whose terms expire this year.  Congratulations to Susan Boyles, Eric Richardson, Daniel Knight, Josh Davie, and Allison Parker on being elected to the Insurance Law Section Council and thank you for your willingness to serve the Section and the Bar Association.  Susan, Eric, Daniel, Josh, and Allison were elected to fill the seats of Kim Sullivan, John Jo, Douglas Nauman, Elizabeth Scott, and Ellen Wortman, whose terms expire on June 30, 2019.  Additionally, Joe Eason was elected to fill Brian Beverly’s seat on the council after Brian was nominated and elected to serve as the upcoming Treasurer.  Thank you Kim, John, Douglas, Elizabeth, and Ellen for your years of service to the Section and the Bar Association.

The Annual Meeting also saw the election of the Section’s officers for the upcoming year, beginning in July of this year.  Mike Medford will become the Section’s Chair, while Jennifer Welch will serve as the Vice Chair, Alan Ruley as the Secretary, and Brian Beverly as the Treasurer.  Congratulations to you all on your officer positions and thank you for your continued service to the Section and the Bar Association.  In welcoming the Section’s new officers, thank you to Deb Bowers who has served as the Section’s Chair for the past year.  Deb’s leadership has been instrumental to the continued growth of the Section.  Thank you Deb for all your hard work and service to the Section and the Bar Association.

Make sure to mark your calendars for next year’s annual CLE and meeting which will be on Thursday, January 30, 2020.
