The Insurance Law Section has a new medium for giving you insurance news – a blog. We have moved away from a newsletter format and now embrace the blog format. Welcome. I am the chair of the Insurance Law Section this 2017-18 year. We have an exciting year ahead of us. Let me give you a quick snapshot.

Annual Meeting/CLE

We are moving the annual meeting/CLE from the April date to a January date. It will be Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the NC Bar Center on Weston Parkway in Cary. The CLE program co-chairs are Alan Ruley and Deb Bowers. You will soon receive a brochure about the CLE, and I encourage you to register and attend.

Current Officers

Vice-Chair is Deb Bowers. Secretary is Mike Medford. Treasurer is Jennifer Welch. Again, I am chair. At the Jan. 31 annual meeting, the section will elect the secretary and treasurer for the 7-1-2018 / 6-30-2019 year, as well as five new members of the council. The incoming president of the NCBA appoints the chair and vice chair of the section.

Blog

Our blog editors are Bill Lipscomb and Dan Knight. As you can see from our first posts, our editors are currently focusing on summaries of recent cases on North Carolina insurance law. We also plan to use the blog to announce upcoming section activities and events, as well as any other newsworthy item. If you want to write an article or case summary that is insurance-related, please submit it to Bill and Dan.

Council Meetings

Our Section Council will be meeting four times this year: Sept. 7 at 3 p.m. in Greensboro at Nexsen Pruet; Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. in Charlotte at McGuire Woods; Jan. 30 at 4 p.m. in Cary at the Bar Center; and April 5 at 4 p.m. in Winston-Salem at Bell Davis Pitt. Any of you is welcome to attend these meetings.

Networking Events

We are planning to have networking events. There will be a networking event in Charlotte after the Nov. 17 council meeting and in Winston-Salem after the April 5 council meeting. We will have our annual dinner in Cary on Jan. 30, the night before the annual meeting/CLE, and a networking reception in the afternoon of the CLE. Expect to see announcements for these events as we get closer to them.

Other Committees

Our Membership Committee is being chaired by Laura Loyek and Brian Beverly. Our Pattern Jury Instruction Committee is being chaired by Steven DeGeorge and Mike Medford. Our Legislative Committee is being chaired by Joe Eason and Kim Sullivan. Our Ethics Committee is being chaired by Al Root. The Pro Bono Committee is being chaired by Jonathan Ward.

I think that about covers it. Looking forward to a fun year with everyone.
