COMMITTEE AND SECTION UPDATES

Legal Feeding Frenzy: Legal Feeding Frenzy 2019: On Tour in NC! We invite you to join us this year at the LFF KICK-OFF EVENT at your local food bank. We’re hosting events at food banks across the state throughout January and February 2019, leading up to this year’s contest March 1-30.  Attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, practice administrators, law professors and students are invited to network with colleagues, give back to our communities, and see firsthand how the LFF impacts our neighbors.  Families welcome; age restrictions may apply.  Contact the LFF’s Event Coordinator, Shirley Smircic at [email protected] for information about the event nearest you.

The Construction Section: The NCBA Construction Section is working to actively engage Young Lawyers in its programs. The Construction Section has established a special YLD Committee, led by John Holton (Williams Mullen) and Lee Robertson (Robertson & Associates) to focus on innovative ways the Section can deliver targeted programs to young lawyers to equip them with the skills they need to provide clients with strong representation. Any members of the YLD who are interested in learning more about the Construction Section are invited to reach out to John or Lee to learn about the exciting direction of the Construction Section.

Law Student Outreach Committee: The NCBA YLD Law Student Outreach Committee needs volunteers for two new programs!

  1. “Grab a Coffee”
We are looking for volunteers who are willing to get together with current law students over coffee at a location that is convenient for you. This is a great opportunity to connect with a law student and pass on valuable insight you may have about succeeding in law school, passing the bar exam, or entering the practice of law.  This is only a one (1) time commitment of 30 minutes of your time, but could have a lasting impact on a student!
  2. “Resume Review”
We are looking for volunteers who can to review law student resumes and provide anonymous feedback.  After signing up, we will provide you with as many resumes as you would like to take on (we ask that you commit to at least two) and spend 10 to 15 minutes reviewing each resume and completing an anonymous one (1) page form that will be returned to the student.

If you are interested in participating in either of these programs, please contact Eric Spose at [email protected].

Disaster Legal Services: The NCBA YLD And Legal Aid of North Carolina have implemented pro bono disaster legal services for victims of Hurricane Florence.  To date, over 550 cases have been opened.  More volunteer attorneys are needed to accept these cases.  The majority of the questions are basic and currently focus on housing rights, insurance claims, and FEMA appeals.  No special expertise is needed and numerous resources, trainings, and examples are available.  The vast majority of cases can be handled in under 5 hours.  Please consider volunteering with the NCBA YLD and Legal Aid of North Carolina to assist with this effort.  Additional information and sign ups can be found here.

Wellness Committee Tip #11 | “Be Where Your Feet Are”  Lawyers know the value of time. However, if we accept that time is our most valuable resource, why do we spend so much of it thinking about things in the future outside of our control? Focus on the task at hand. Doing the basics well is not easy because the allure of something better distracts us from the incremental steps we must take to get where we want to go. By being where our feet are, by living present, we increase our opportunities for connection. By increasing our opportunities for connection, we increase the likelihood of fulfillment. Connection and fulfillment are linked inexorably to living present; to being where your feet are. So, as you find yourself looking ahead, challenge yourself to win the moment in front of you, because that moment is all that’s promised.
