A Gift for Those Who Walk the Extra Mile: A FitBit Review

By Russell Rawlings
“He likes this more than any present I have ever given him.”
So says my wife of 28 years in regard to the Fitbit activity tracker that my staff gave me for Christmas last year. I didn’t know what to make of the Fitbit One when I opened the package because the only Fitbits I had ever seen were of the wristband variety. Fitbit One proved the perfect choice because I can clip it to my pants pocket and track my steps throughout the day.

If I had to come up with one word to explain why I love my Fitbit it would be accountability. I have been a dedicated walker for many years, but I had never tracked how far I was walking. With Fitbit I have a daily threshold that I strive to exceed as well as a weekly total that I enjoy comparing with others who have signed on to my group. It’s like the movie “ Groundhog Day” in that each day starts at zero and you have all day to achieve your goal. This has helped me immensely because I now realize that I don’t have to do all of my walking in the morning – every step counts.
Fitbit and other devices have additional features, but for me it’s the step tracking that has been a game-changer. I lost 60 pounds in advance of my 60th birthday, and the Fitbit One has been a key component in my successful lifestyle adjustment. Coupled with a healthy diet, it’s a great way to keep track of your activity and progress without turning it into a full-time job.
About the only other thing you need is a dog like Brownie, our collie
-hound rescue who loves to walk. Make your dog happy and get yourself healthy at the same time! What’s not to love about that?
